Description

On a regular basis (once a week is usually enough), our Nabble instance (http://nabble.documentfoundation.org) needs cleaning up.

This involves:
  • handling user join requests
  • marking and removing spam list by list
  • finding volunteers to support these efforts

How many volunteers are handling this, or is it just you working on it? If so, we maybe should try to find volunteers to distribute the work :)

I think I'm alone to do it at the moment.

Similar to AskBot, do we have some most active users we could ask for help?

I can ask on the website list for somebody able to do the cleaning on all lists.

all lists.

Sounds great - let's see if that yields any results, we can then follow-up.

So, Dennis, Jean Spiteri and Korravit Pruegsanusak have proposed to help me. As I'm not sure how to manage others rights on Nabble, I'll begin to add Dennis and then will see after to add Jean and Korravit as moderators.

Not sure if Nabble is a cul de sac anyways; IMHO admin rights are tied to someone (Drew?). Do you know how frequently it is used? The more I think about it, the more I'm unsure whether we shouldn't look into some alternative...

I have admin rights, so I can give them to Dennis when he let me know if he is subscribed. I know it's used a lot for the dev@, users@ and in the FR community too, I don't know for others, it's a very convenient way to post attachments. So if we move to another gateway, we should take care that attachment are allowed and easy to post.

What's your gut feeling in terms of usability? I see the attachment option as a pro indeed, and have to admit I don't use Nabble, so can't make an educated guess - just my gut feeling is that the usability could be improved a lot. Do we have any user feedback?

Reason for the question is that I wonder whether we shouldn't look into something self-hosted mid- to long-term.

It could be much better in term of usability, but it seems to answer the basic needs still now. From what I see in FR community, it's used without difficulties. The problem is more on the admin side but here also, Dennis run the scripts when needed and he is of great help. The only really annoying thing is the add window that open each time you use the service.
I'm not aware of an open source replacement. I know that some communities use Discourse that way (https://www.discourse.org/features) but it's more like a forum.
