Description

http://www.stopforumspam.com is a very useful site which lets you check email and IP addresses against lists of known spammers. It's used by phpBB forums to check new accounts, and could possibly be adapted for use on the wiki as well.

This extension should be modified so it does not check the IP, but email/username: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:StopForumSpam

Then we could get rid of our IP blacklist solution.

well and then you might block users by accident because of their user name. also not good. :-(
the system is broken. too many false / positives.

I wonder if we might able to block e-mail addresses...

Blocking by email address is exactly what I wanted to do. That's what I used exclusively around 2010-2012 when I used StopForumSpam as a forum admin for a couple of forums.

I just mentioned usernames, because it should be one of the three options available and it could be evaluated as well.

Same here - I ran a forum from 2014 to 2017 and used Stop Forum Spam to block by email addresses. It worked really well.

new spam filter works like a charm. rejecting for now. For the case spammers find again a way, we will try that out again.
