Description

Create a series (playlist) of short videos demonstrating new features in LibreOffice 5.2.

Some things to consider:

  • As some features (like new drawing tools) are consistent across all components, make a separate "general" feature for those?
  • Should we highlight all new features or just focus on some very specific ones?

Objective is to get these ready by early July, so that NLPs can produce translated versions.

Script prepared, and run by the marketing-priv list; will run it by the marketing list as well. Italo notes that we should mention Miklos' work on document classification as well.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: GENERAL

In LibreOffice 5.2, many new features have been added which can be used in all components of the suite.

New drawing tools are available, including filled curves, polygons and freeform lines.

For improved security, multiple signature descriptions are now supported, along with import and export of signatures from OOXML files.

When printing a document, Print to File is now available in the list of printers.

If you use Google Drive for storage, two-factor authentication support has been included.

Finally, it's now possible to customise most of the context menus, for even greater control of the interface.

See our other videos for new features in Writer, Calc and Impress.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: WRITER

LibreOffice 5.2 brings several improvements and updates to Writer, the word processor.

A single toolbar mode has been added, to save screen space on low-resolution devices.

It's now possible to show and hide the track changes toolbar via a button.

In the Cross References view, a new filter helps you to narrow down selections quickly.

The bookmarks dialog has been redesigned to be easier to use.

Finally, the Save toolbar button includes a quick Save as Template option, so you don't have to go through the menu.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: CALC

In LibreOffice 5.2, Calc has been enhanced with new features to help you work smarter with spreadsheets.

New functions have been added, along with extensive tooltips that describe what a function does as you type it.

It's now possible to quickly freeze the first column or row of a sheet via the toolbar or context menu.

Multiple status bar functions can be active at the same time, to provide a quick overview of your data.

The currency toolbar icon now includes a drop-down menu to quickly choose the currency you want to use.

A single toolbar mode has been added that contains the most-used operations, to save on screen space.

And finally, when removing the border from selected cells, you can also choose to remove the border from adjacent cells as well.

LIBREOFFICE 5.2 NEW FEATURES: IMPRESS

LibreOffice 5.2 includes several updates to Impress, to help you create and manage presentations more efficiently.

When working with custom animations, you can now quickly add an effect to an element via the sidebar, instead of using a separate dialog box.

The list of effects in the sidebar now includes a description of the effect, along with the element name.

In the properties sidebar, a new Slide Background panel lets you quickly change the format, orientation and background image of a slide.

Finally, a new toolbar button has been added to quickly show or hide the drawing tools.

Impress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X3YIdTvBXU

So they're all done now, and waiting for any feedback. When they go live on release day, I'll also create a YouTube playlist and short URL (eg tdf.io/52vids) for spreading around.

These are available in English now: http://tdf.io/52vids

Unlisted at present but will be public for the release on Wednesday. Link sent to selected journalists.

The community has contributed some translations here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Videos/5.2_New_Features_Script

No audio yet though, so I will look at doing some subtitled videos.

I think this ticket can be closed now?

I'd like to keep it open a bit longer while I work on some translations / subtitles, if that's OK :-)

  • Status changed from In Progress to Closed

OK, all translations have now been added as subtitles, so closing this ticket as the main job is done. (If any more full translations are added to the wiki I'll convert them to subtitles too, but I don't expect many more now.)
