Description

Members of the MediaGoblin team could help us set up and configure an install.

Useful for hosting
  • Conference videos and images
  • Images from outreach
  • Screencasts/how-to videos
  • etc..

If someone is able to deal with the setup I can provide a VM.

Do they have designers / video graphists or do they only provide technology? In any case it's certainly something we should experiment... Robinson, can you set it up?

Mostly just tech.

Sorry, I haven't had any time to chat with Chris Webber or the other MG folks. Everything else has been keeping me very busy! It's good to have this bug here, closed or not. I'll reopen if I find time, or if we can locate a volunteer to carry this through.

Thanks. I was about to wonder about this -- as much as I like MediaGobin before we add another hosting platform, we need to:
  • clarify the unique selling point of this over our preexisting solutions
  • check, if those are bigger than the silo effect (different stuff on different solutions and barriers to communication between them)
  • check, if we clearly can define the what-goes-where between the solutions
  • check, if MediaGoblin is a complete or mostly complete superset of one of our existing solutions. In which case we need to decommission the old solution, migrate the stuff and shut down the old stuff (or make it a read-only mirror of the latter).

Without that, the no new platform should not be accepted into production, esp. not by being sneaked in.

AFAIK we don't currently have a tool for storing/hosting video. That's the biggest selling point off the top of my head.

It would be nice to have all of our video from conferences, etc.. stored in one place. I believe that MG has good support for image sets, as well as some social networking integration via pump.io, but I haven't investigated any of that yet...

Not knowing all details, but hosting video can suck a LOT of bandwith -
that's why I prefer using YouTube for that

Archiving is a different story, but for user access, hosting at TDF
infra is not the best choice for such large files
