Description

https://smile.amazon.com:

"Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice."

Claims to support "almost one million eligible 501(c)(3) public charitable organizations". I need to see if we can get TDF into this, and then look at how we promote it.

Maybe it's worth (if there's sufficient time) before Christmas, so we can take advantage of the Christmas donation period?

Good idea -- changing target version to Q4/2016 and moving it towards the top of my todo-list!

It looks like this is only available for charities in the USA:

"Organizations must be public charitable organizations that are registered and in good standing with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) to be eligible to participate. Eligible charitable organizations must also be located in one of the 50 U.S. states or the District of Columbia."

I've emailed Florian with an idea for another option, but looks like we might be out of luck here...

OK, so there is a German version in operation now; looking into registering TDF.

Need a couple of bits of info from Florian and then will progress with this.

What's missing? I thought I mailed something - sorry if I forgot, just
let me know :-)

I've completed the registration with stifter-helfen.de, which is required to make us accessible on AmazonSmile. We should hear back from stifter-helfen.de in 4 - 5 days, so I'll keep an eye on them.

Update on this: stifter-helfen.de has said registration can take up to 10 working days due to lots of applications at the moment, so it looks unlikely we'll be able to do this before Christmas. Bumping to next year.

http://stifter-helfen.de has accepted our registration; we're still not available on Amazon yet, and if that doesn't change in a few days I'll chase them up to find out why.

OK, we're now available on Amazon Smile. I intend to complete the registration next week, time permitting.

We are now registered, and can send people this link (German) to buy products from Amazon and give 0.5% of the cost to TDF:

https://smile.amazon.de/ch/27-641-01975

Here's how the money is paid:

"In jedem Quartal übermittelt die Amazon per elektronischer Überweisung Beträge an teilnahmebereichtigte Organisationen. Die Beträge werden ungefähr 45 Tage nach dem Ende jedes Kalenderquartals überwiesen."

English: we get paid after every quarter of the year. Payments take around 45 days to arrive, after the quarter has ended.

We still need to confirm our bank account but otherwise this should be ready to go.

Thanks a lot for handling that, especially the tedious registration process ;-)
Adding Thorsten to this ticket now, who initially proposed AmazonSmiles

I'm looking for ideas how that can be promoted. Adding it as donation mechanism next to the others doesn't sound worthwhile, as we probably distract people from other mechanisms.

We could either use it for links to books (but keep in mind not everyone's a fan of Amazon), or factor it into the revamped download page, such as "In case you don't want to donate time or money, here's some other ways to support us".

Thoughts?

I'm in favour of an "Other ways to support us" option on the download/donate page.

To keep this moving, shall I post it to the DE-discuss list for ideas and suggestions?

Can you update the HTML mockup to reflect it? This way we can just add
it to the proposal, no need to discuss on the list IMHO

I can, although the current mockup is in English whereas AmazonSmile for TDF is only available in Germany and Austria. So in the end we'll only have that extra link in the German translated version.

Good point indeed - let's postpone it until we have the final design and
will roll it out to the German website, I agree.
