Description

We've added a new general FAQ to the website: http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/frequently-asked-questions/

And we've also created a dedicated email address for download problems.

I can create short (30 seconds each) videos showing the process from clicking Download through to installing and running LO for the first time.

As there are so many combinations of operating systems and web browsers out there, we'd have to select a subset, eg:

  • Windows 10 and Firefox
  • Windows 10 and Chrome
  • Windows 10 and Edge
  • macOS and Firefox
  • macOS and Chrome
  • macOS and Safari

Bumping to Q1/2018, as it's not super high priority IMO and it'd be best to wait for LO 6.0 now to have the latest graphics/splash screen.

The rest of Q1 is quite full and this ticket has been around for a while, and is not on the priority list
Do we have a concrete need? From the mails we receive, is it rather people having problems to download, or people having problems to install?
My take is it's the former (and so a video wouldn't help) - but you are more directly connected to the download@ alias, so I'd love to hear your thoughts ;-)
If you concur, we could leave the ticket open for anyone who is interested, and you could offer them to help with producing a screencast to share that knowledge, rather than doing yourself

Yes, I think downloading is more relevant. Let me try to make a very short (20 second) video for this, that we can link in the pink "If you are having problems downloading LibreOffice..." box on the download/donate page. Like, "Having problems downloading? Check out our short video" with a link, followed by the email address if there are further problems.

This should just be one afternoon's work so let's keep it in Q1 - I'll do it next week when I've finished my Annual Report sections. Script draft:

  • LibreOffice is free to download. Visit our website at www.libreoffice.org, click the Download menu, and then Download LibreOffice.
  • Your operating system should be automatically detected, but you can change it here if necessary.
  • Click the Download button to go to the next step.
  • When you see this page, the download should begin automatically - but if it doesn't, click the link to the filename
  • You can also make an optional donation to support our community of developers
  • For installation guides, click Get Help and Installation Instructions in the menu

Bumping this to Q2 as it's now April, and I'm super busy with the Annual Report. But I still plan to get it done when the Annual Report is finished. Harald B. from the German community is also planning to make a similar video so I can work with him on that.

So here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB4plAhvr7c

Sent to the team list for feedback -- after that we can embed/link it in various places (and add it to the download@ auto-responder).

Here's the final video, after feedback -- I've asked Sophie to update the download@ auto-responder text accordingly:
