Description
The idea occured to improve our landing page images, e.g. the rotation on www.libreoffice.org
We might add some A/B testing to that as well to see which image(s) keep people on the site for the longest time, lead to downloads etc.

No feedback from marketing-priv@ about the iStockphoto image, and as it's only €11 I'll ask for the marketing budget to buy it.
Feedback about the hackfest pic: not everyone looks like they're having fun, so let's choose another (eg from an evening event). Will find an alternative.

What are the license conditions? Do people need to be mentioned? I know
some photo stock sites require that it is done directly at the image
and the copyright owners do chase that... weird world...

We can purchase and use the image under the standard iStock license (as we're not putting it on merchandise or printing over 500,000 copies of it). The attribution policy from the license agreement is:
Do I need to include a photo credit? You do not need to include a photo credit for commercial use, but if you are using content for editorial purposes, you must include the following credit adjacent to the content or in visual production credits: "iStock.com/Artist's Member Name."
Editorial purposes doesn't cover our use of the image as a landing page image on the website, and the image I proposed doesn't have any additional licensing restrictions, so I think we can use it.

Editorial purposes doesn't cover our use of the image as a landing page
image on the website, and the image I proposed doesn't have any
additional licensing restrictions, so I think we can use it.
Sounds sensible - however, is there someone we can ask at iStock about
this to get explicit confirmation? I'm a bit sensitive towards that topic...

I heard back from iStock regarding this photo:

You can use our content in advertising, marketing, apps, websites, social media, TV and film, presentations, newspapers, magazines and books ... You don't need to add a credit text on this Image. You purchase the standard license and than you can download/use this Image for your Website in any way you want.
On that basis, I will get permission for the €11 from the marketing budget to buy it.

Let's see how this year's LibOCon group photo is - I like the Brno version because of the waiving hands, but the Rome one might have a nicer scenery. Let's see, but the Brno version is fine in any case. :-)

So we got marketing permission to buy six iStock credits, and have used one to replace the pen as the first landing page image:

It's live on the site now. The previous pen image is still available at http://www.libreoffice.org/themes/libreofficenew/img/header1-pen.jpg
I will now track its effect on the website. As reference metrics, these are visits to /download/download/ from the landing page in the last 14 days, according to Piwik:

- Oct 28: 5758

I propose leaving the new office picture up for a week, record the stats, then switch back to the pen for another week and do a comparison. In the meantime, I'll look at replacing the other pictures as well (eg from the recent conference).

So the new landing page image (office) has been online since November 6th. These are visits to /download/download/ from the landing page since then:

- Average with office pic on landing page: 6481
So the pen appears to be slightly more popular, but other factors could come into play (and there are more weekends in the stats for the office). Switching back to the pen now for a week or two to compare.

Average over these days: 6728. Previous average for the pen: 6921, and average for the office picture: 6481. So based on that, we can say that the pen is slightly more popular, and we should keep it. We do, however, still have http://www.libreoffice.org/themes/libreofficenew/img/header1-office.jpg if we want to use it in future, and indeed for other marketing materials.
Meanwhile, regarding the "fun project" image (the second), I've replaced this:

It has a greater variety of people (age, gender). I'm not sure if it's worth doing extensive A/B testing on this change, though. Florian, any thoughts? Or do you think this ticket is complete now?

I'd close this one - the main task was to replace the image on the page with some more recent one, which you did successfully. A/B testing is a general topic especially wrt. donation pages, so let's close this for the moment and create a new one when there's a need.
