Description

We currently have two main websites, www.libreoffice.org for the program and the community, and www.documentfoundation.org for the foundation entity
(For this ticket, the TDF website is out of scope)

What the TDF website should provide:

  • a quick overview of the foundation entity, its bodies, statutes and staff
  • a link to our annual reports and our monthly ledgers
  • quick access to our main projects, LibreOffice and DLP

What needs doing is:

  • identifying doubled content that is on LibO as well as TDF website
    • samples: Advisory Board, governance
  • for this and other content decide whether it fits on the TDF or the LibO website
    • samples: certificaiton might go to the LibO website, governance and mailing lists on the TDF website
  • drafting a new TDF website with the LibO layout
    • graphic work is outside the scope of this ticket
    • we can add distinctive graphics elements later on
    • coordinate with Cloph to get a test instance
    • Florian will then ACK the switchover

Concrete items that are missing from the current page:

  • a page that lists all good ecosystem participants who employ at least one certified person (developers/trainers/migrators)
    • the expertise they can offer
    • some additional information on how they support the community
    • whether they are in the AB/sponsors
    • the contact information of 1. the company and 2. individual developers with at least e-mail and phone plus website
    • the countries and regions they are active in
    • possibly logos (details to be clarified with Florian)
    • That should be accompanied by an easy to read initial paragraph that's not too technical.
    • An easy-to-fill form for companies to get added to that page.

The certification section on TDF is completely different, as most documents are on TDF and on LibreOffice there is only a summary. Migrating is not a problem, but we should create a certification section on LibreOffice to mirror TDF section.

I think we even should merge the two :)

I think this is going to confuse people even more.

The Document Foundation and LibreOffice are not the same thing. People should know they are separate things. There should be a visual separation, which currently is minimal since TDF does not even have its own branding (it shares the same Document Symbol with LibreOffice).

Is it so difficult to keep TDF content in its own site but with an updated (and different from LO’s) design?

Actions #6

The current TDF page is way out of date and the design can be improved a
lot.

Having that with a fresh design and fresh content is a first important
step. It will be in the TDF domain, not the LibO one.

If you know someone volunteering to improve the design afterwards,
that's even better! Happy to have some distinction between the two pages
if someone brings in the skills to do that. ;-)

From the board meeting minutes, something to have on the new TDF page as well: create a page that lists all good ecosystem participants who employ at least one certified person

Good to know!

I would be personally interested in refreshing the TDF brand, mainly because it really needs to be different from LibreOffice’s. I have some graphic design skills, but as I can’t code I would need help to create, e.g., HTML mockups and the like... to make it roll faster...

Florian, the page with all ecosystem members who employ certified professionals is already available both at tdf.org and at libreoffice.org since February (and there are also links to companies or individuals). It might be difficult to find, because people are looking for something with a different wording, but I have no idea about the right wording to make is easier to find. Maybe create a "support" section? It looks like the "get help" section is not the place where people look for professional support.

Let's quickly talk in the call about what the plan is :-)

Actions #13

Updated by Florian Effenberger almost 9 years ago

The plan for this ticket is have a completely new website for TDF, www.documentfoundation.org
The page we have right now is quite old, outdated and not really attractive
With the LibreOffice design in Silverstripe, we should start from scratch
My idea is that you propose a set of pages and content to the website list, that we gather community feedback, and work on a new TDF (not LibreOffice) website
We don't need that much content, just some overview of TDF, our reports, ledgers, board, MC, staff etc.

A note from the discussion on the certification/ecosystem participant list:

a list of companies within the LibreOffice ecosystem, stating if they employ certified developers/trainers/migrators, possibly some additional information on how they support the community, whether they are in the AB/sponsors, and of course the contact information plus possibly logos.

and

  • contact info of devs
  • country/locations they're active in
  • update the initial paragraph (too technical maybe)

After the feedback from the website and the marketing mailing list, I have updated the document about the new contents. I will start working on the contents immediately, in order to have the pages ready by the end of the month.

Actions #22

Existing contents have been migrated to the staging site, and some have been also updated as in the case of the supporters page. Forms have to be re-created as they are impossible to import. I will now start to work on the missing contents, but people can start to have a look to what is in place to provide their comments.

Actions #23

Updated by Italo Vignoli over 8 years ago

The website on the staging area is now complete (including the advisory board and the affiliation pages). There is only one thing missing, and is a final check of all links, as I have realized that some have been lost during the migration. I plan to close this final activity by the end of this week.

Not sure if I've seen the right page. I went to www.documentfoundation.org/admin/, logged in and clicked draft/staging/preview (whatever it's in English) in the lower left corner.

Things from the ticket description I've spotted at a quick first glance:

  • a link to our annual reports and our monthly ledgers is missing
  • link to DLP is missing
    • within the new design, either have "LibreOffice" and "Document Liberation Project" as top items, a short introductory page and link to the respective main websites then, or have "Projects" as menu item, with the same process afterwards
  • there's double content on the websites, e.g. the Advisory Board
  • the mailing lists are better off on the LibO website
  • certification is listed - shouldn't it go to the LibO website?
  • the FAQ page still lists Novell
  • the AB page is empty

Can you let me know if I've seen the right page? ;-) Doesn't look complete to me...

You have accessed the wrong staging website. To access the right staging area, you have to log in at www.libreoffice.org/admin, and choose "tdf-new-test" from the dropdown menu just below your name.

Mailing lists are still there, under Community, but we can easily get rid of that page (although they might live under Community, but this is just my opinion). In addition, we can add to the Community area a page with links to Native Language Projects (at least, those with a blog or a website), which is very easy to create. In general, we should improve the Community area.

Certification and Professional Support have been updated, and can be easily moved to the LibreOffice website (although the space on the menu is missing). On the other hand, Certification is a project of the foundation, so it might stay under TDF and be duplicated on the LibreOffice website, while Professional Support might be entirely moved to the LibreOffice website.

Links to LibreOffice and DLP are on the home page. We can add clickable logos, to make them more visible (again, a quick change).

In general, I have updated or improved the contents, but - not being a visual expert - I have not added images and logos, as I expect that this will be done by website or design experts.

general

  • the logo should be changed, to only have TDF, and not confuse it with the LibO page
    • ask the design list for help, to get an edited logo, similar to the current page (paper clip + TDF in big letters)
  • on the main page, we should show the LibO and DLP logos and link to the respective websites > DONE
  • to support smaller screens, change "LibreOffice Certification" to "Certification". I wonder whether we should not completely host that at the LibO page? > DONE, we can move Certification to LibreOffice, but we do not have enough space there (we should enhance the CSS adding one level to menus), or we can move it certification.libreoffice.org (using WordPress, which is easier to maintain)
  • same for professional support, isn't that better listed at the LibO page? >SAME as previous
  • from the list of social media buttons, remove all LibO, so we just focus on TDF > they are part of the template, and I have not been able to find it
  • let's remove the "latest tweets" section for the moment > SAME as previous
  • there's a leftover menu on the right side (ok, that sentence sounds stupid, I know ;-) for many subpages > SAME as previous
  • in the foundation submenu, rename financials to financials & reports > DONE

home

  • we should come up with a better text, not sure if the OOo history is still that relevant > CHANGED
  • LibreOffice is made available... -> TDF is made possible due to the efforts of thousands of volunteers around the world, and due to our generous donors ... > DONE, also added "Become a TDF Member"

foundation - statutes

  • New introduction: Being based in Germany, our binding statutes are the German version. For the convenience of our internation community of contributors, we provide an English translation at ... > CHANGED
  • link the headings to the top of the page, so people can easily jump back and forth > CSS, I cannot change it
  • add a table of contents with the headings > SAME as previous

foundation - governance

  • BoD, MC, BoT, apply for membership should be reflected in a menu on the right side, that also has Governence as top item, to make jumping back and forth easy > MENU is there
  • ESC and AB should get their own menu items under the foundation top menu > MENU is there

foundation - MC

  • remove the results of the 2014 election, as we don't have it for the board either > DONE

foundation - ESC

  • Can you check if the page is in line with the wiki page, so we know if one or the other should be deprecated/link to each other? > ESC member list is based on the wiki page, so they are identical

foundation - FAQ

  • Are these entries still recent, or should we update (or even remove) the FAQ? Lots of OOo references that might be slowly outdating these days > DELETED

community

  • I'd completely remove this menu item: mailing lists are on the respective project's pages, supporters is a page we wanted to get rid of anyways, and the grant request should go into the foundation menu > DONE

get in touch

  • I'd clean this page up: have press & media contact on top, general inquiries below, followed by security contact; remove blogosphere and social networks altogether > DONE
