Description
MirrorBrain has served us well but is unfortunately no longer developed, so these shortcomings are unlikely to be fixed:
- Dependency on legacy GeoIP databases, which are no longer updated hence will be less and less accurate over time (meaning folks might be redirected to a mirror on the other side of the world and rightfully complain about slow downloads)
- Clients connecting via TLS might be redirected to an http:// mirror
- Clients over v6 might be redirected to a v4-only mirror
- Dependency on Apache2
MirrorBits seems a promising replacement: https://github.com/etix/mirrorbits . We need to investigate if it plays well with our tooling, incl. scanning and metric collection tools.

Good topic for a volunteer, but then important enough to look into it before the end of the year

Hmm. Tough call. Perhaps to inform any decisions here, let me throw in some random links:

Thanks, migration has been a recurring discussion topic in the infra calls too — minutes from the Jan and May calls in particular are worth reading.
