we’re not really comparing area. It’s the straightness of the line that we are relying on.
...
These examples have very specific angles, and only two categories. What if we have more categories? And different angles? Well, that’s when the pie chart falls down.
So pie charts make sense, when we are comparing two things. All the things we visualise in the Dashboard with pie charts have more than two things.
I think they should be replaced with bar charts, separated or stacked based on the amount of things. Stacked (can be laid out horizontally) would fit the organisations as there are quite a lot of them.
I am not sure if this is something we can configure ourselves, or
something that needs development first - anyone has more insight?
Guilhem showed the new dashboard today and it looks like the developers noticed the problem themselves and decided to replace pie charts with donut charts. For this use case they are fine: http://hypsypops.com/pie-chart-donut-chart/

We can edit the visualisation of course, as long as the it's something supported by Kibana or its plugin, cf. https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/current/visualize.html . For substantial changes we might need a kibana guru, but trivial changes — such as replacing pie charts with donuts — are no-brainer.
