We're using the lasted point release in the ‘1.29’ branch (1.29.2), which was released on Nov. 14 last year hence is definitely what I would call a “recent version”. MediaWiki released 1.30 since, but upgrading to a new major version needs more care, and since 1.29.x is still supported I thought we would stick to that branch for a bit longer: new features are nice but MediaWiki is a fast-moving target and upgrading to the most recent major release as soon as it's released requires quite some work. Moreover bugs are often found and fixed in subsequent point releases. So IMHO there is no urgency to upgrade ASAP.
